Our story

From science to scale in clean energy

Founded in 2001 by Enn Õunpuu, Elcogen was established to commercialise advanced fuel cell technology and deliver cleaner, more efficient energy solutions at scale. Drawing on Estonia’s strong scientific heritage in electrochemistry, Õunpuu recognised the untapped potential of solid oxide fuel cells as a high efficiency alternative to combustion based energy generation.

From research to reality

Turning solid oxide fuel cell innovation into commercial success

From the beginning, Elcogen has focused on solid oxide fuel cell technology, working closely with leading academic institutions including University of Tartu. This collaboration helped bridge the gap between research and commercial application. After years of development, the company reached an important milestone in 2010 with its first pilot production and initial customer deliveries, demonstrating the reliability and performance of its technology.

Did you know?

Wilhelm Ostwald, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist who studied in Tartu, helped lay the foundations of modern electrochemistry, inspiring innovations like today’s fuel cells.

Technology leadership

High performance fuel cell solutions designed for efficiency and reliability

Today, Elcogen serves a growing global customer base. Its fuel cells, stacks and modules are integrated into third-party systems, delivering consistent performance and reliability across a wide range of applications. In addition to supplying components, Elcogen provides comprehensive services to support technology integration, ensuring seamless adoption and optimal functionality. These solutions are designed to unlock the full potential of renewable energy and deliver higher efficiency than traditional technologies.

Scaling for impact

Expanding production to meet growing global demand

In 2025, Elcogen opened its new production facility, ELCO I, on the outskirts of Tallinn. This marked a significant step in scaling operations from pilot production to mass manufacturing, with a capacity of up to 360 megawatts at full output. As the company continues to expand, it remains focused on advancing clean energy technology and supporting the global transition to more sustainable energy solutions.
